Resources to grow as Disciples
Great leaders inspire others to take action, not because of what they do, but because they give people something to believe in. So leader, I am asking you a personal question, “Why do you believe?” Not what doctrine do you hold or what denominational values do you claim, but deep in your heart of hearts, late at night when no one is watching, why do you believe? That’s not the same question as “what do you believe.” I really mean “why.”
It really matters because people can feel your passion. Or not.
Convincing someone of the value of something rarely works; even if that value is Jesus.
Inspiring people is tough to do if you are not inspired yourself. It is possible to love God and at the same time fall out of love with the church. “The church” can be a beast from time to time and we are living in one of those times. Being a leader during the biggest cultural shift that has ever happened on the planet is enough to wear anyone out. So, for those of you that are feeling out of breath and low on passion, you are in good company.
One step towards catching your breath is to look back. Ask yourself why you fell in love with Jesus and served in the church in the first place? “Why” is the question that lies underneath the “what” and shows up in how we talk about what matters to us.
If you are reluctant to do the “why” exercise for yourself, how about for the mission of the church?
In 1962, Everett Rogers popularized a theory that seeks to explain how, why, and at what rate new ideas and technology spread throughout cultures. It explains the spread of ideas. Interestingly, related to sharing the Gospel, people in the left side of the curve basically trust their gut. They are willing to go with something new based on an emotional response or passion. Our “why” is our passion.
I’m not making this up. Check out this TED talk or read Simon Sinek’s book “Start with Why.” Sure, he’s not talking about Jesus, but we can learn from anyone. Don’t be a laggard when it comes to regaining your passion for the real love of your life. LEAD is launching a coaching ministry in September. Maybe you want accompaniment as you reclaim “Why you believe.” Either way, it’s worth digging into.
